FoRG policy:
FoRG for some time has been lobbying the Council for the imposition of a 20mph zone around the Green (with signage painted on the road surface). We have considered but rejected a variety of alternative ‘speed calming’ options. Speed humps and raised tables create noise and air pollution and are aesthetically unattractive. Horizontal displacements, to be effective, need to be ‘tight’. However, as The Green is a strategic diversion route for buses, any such ‘chicanes’ would need to be wide and gentle – defeating their effectiveness regarding private vehicle traffic. We do not consider speed cameras to be an acceptable option in this environment.
